Alaya SoundLab is a digital lab where original Buddhist teachings or human-translated teachings are set to music through cutting-edge technology. From modern teachings reimagined as lo-fi, or rock interpretations of upadeshas, from Milarepa singing samba to modern masters in bossa nova—we're exploring how music and technology can serve Dharma transmission.

The Process: Intersemiotic Translation & Vibe Coding

Every teaching is carefully selected or translated. We then perform a second translation—an Intersemiotic Translation—transmuting the essence of the teachings into music & video, encoding dharma wisdom into feeling, rhythm, and sonic atmosphere.

Before production begins, we start by visualizing the specific sonic "body" that will house the teaching. We identify the genre that matches the energy of the text. We don't just pick a random style; rather, we architect a rhythmic environment where the sound acts as a direct emotional bridge to the wisdom, ensuring the genre and the Dharma share the same heartbeat.

Then we sculpt or use original beats and sample landscapes, building sonic foundations from the ground up. These elements are woven together with AI-assisted production, then refined through post-production that can span days or weeks to achieve the perfect resonance.

A Buddhist practitioner directs the entire creative vision—shaping emotional landscapes, musical direction, and artistic choices—while AI tools serve as responsive instruments helping manifest those intentions into full productions with accompanying videos.

The Visual Echo: Cognitive Artifacts

Our work extends beyond the auditory. To complete the intersemiotic translation, we create cinematic videos that serve as cognitive artifacts or visual maps that inspire the modern seeker to navigate the inner terrain of the teaching.
